Roundtable offered 'deep insights' into key global sector

The opportunities and challenges presented by critical raw materials in Africa was at the centre of discussion at a roundtable hosted by King’s College London.

Academic experts were joined by ambassadors from three African nations for the discussion, which took place on 2 April at King’s.

The event was co-chaired by Professor Eka Ikpe (African Leadership Centre) and Dr Mark Langan (European and International Studies) and discussion centred on development related to the extraction and processing of critical raw materials in Africa.

The roundtable put particular focus on new geopolitical initiatives such as the EU’s Critical Raw Materials Act. There was also an opportunity for questions.

The ambassadors in attendance were Namibia's High Commissioner, Her Excellency Linda Scott; Zambia's High Commissioner Her Excellency Macenje Mazoka; and South Africa's High Commissioner, His Excellency Jermiah Mamabolo.

The roundtable was organised by the Department for European and International Studies and the African Leadership Centre.

Dr Langan said: “We were delighted to welcome the High Commissioners from Namibia, South Africa and Zambia for a roundtable discussion on critical raw materials. Their excellencies provided deep insight on African perspectives about the opportunities and challenges currently facing the continent. We hope to welcome them back soon to continue these important conversations.”
