Professor Sir Graham Thornicroft appointed as mental health advisor to Director General of WHO

Professor Sir Graham Thornicroft has been appointed as a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Strategic and Technical Advisory Group on Mental Health, Brain Health and Substance Use.

Professor Sir Graham Thornicroft, a Professor of Community Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King's College London, will advise the WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, on matters relating to mental health, neurological disorders, substance use and addictive behaviours.

In the context of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) agenda, his group will support WHO’s leading role in advancing SDG 2030 health-related targets, especially the targets which focus on promoting mental health and wellbeing and strengthening the prevention and treatment of substance abuse.

The findings and recommendations of the Technical Advisory Group will be presented to WHO Secretariat and to United Nations Member States worldwide.
