Professor Nicola Fear received her CBE for services to Veteran and Military Mental Health at a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace on Friday 28th March 2025. The award was presented by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal. Her Royal Highness has previously spoken at the Veterans' Mental Health Conference, hosted at King's and lead by King's Centre for Military Health Research, of which Professor Fear is Co-Director.

It was a huge honour to receive my CBE from the Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace. She was very interested in the work that we do at King’s to support the Armed Forces Community. It was an unforgettable day and it was wonderful to share the experience with my family.

Nicola has been with King’s since 2004, and is Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Psychological Medicine. Alongside being Co-Director for King’s Centre for Military Health Research, she is a Co-Director of the Forces in Mind Trust Research Centre, and Academic Advisor to the Office for Veterans’ Affairs within the Ministry of Defence.

Nicola is one of the Principal Investigators on the KCMHR military cohort study and leads several studies looking at the impact of military service on families. Over twenty years, the KCMHR cohort study remains the key longitudinal source of data informing the UK Government and voluntary sector policies and service provision along with leading the way in academic research.

Nicola is a superb epidemiologist and wonderful colleague, whose work on the health of the military has had real impact, by changing policy including better mental health service provision for veterans. We are thrilled she has received this much deserved honour.
