Held at the British Dental Association's (BDA) Headquarters in Wimpole Street, London, Professor Gallagher paid tribute to Dr Lindsay (1871 - 1960) through her presentation which explored the life and legacy of Frederick Newland-Pedley, entrepreneur and founder of Guy's Dental School.

Professor Gallagher holds the Newland-Pedley chair at King's College London. Her aim was to show how Newland-Pedley lived and worked across three continents, and how he founded Guy's Dental School in 1898, responding to the needs of the local population and the need for workforce development; an approach he replicated in other contexts. He spent his last years in Italy and is buried by the shores of Lake Como.

Lilian Lindsay was the first woman to be educated and trained as a dentist in the UK, qualifying from Edinburgh in 1895 and going on to be the first female member of the BDA, BDA librarian and the first female BDA President. She was also the first BDA Librarian!

Both Lilian Lindsay and Fredrick Newland-Pedley were born in Victorian England and lived to the age of 88 years. Both dentists demonstrated entrepreneurial skills and left a significant legacy to the profession and society.

Said Professor Gallagher on her lecture: "In tackling our current challenges there is much to be learnt from history."
