Meeting communication needs in homelessness settings
The Unit was at a Speech and Language Therapy event at the House of Lords
Jess Harris, Research Fellow at the NIHR Policy Research Unit in Health and Social Care Workforce, joined others in the Attlee and Reid Rooms at the House of Lords today at an event focused on the importance of recognizing the communication needs of those experiencing homelessness.
The event, chaired by Ian Brady, Chair of the London Housing Federation, featured Speech and Language Therapist Leigh Andrews, among others. Leigh is author of the recently published book, "You all f...ing talk too much": meeting communication needs in homelessness settings (J&R Press, 2024) and leads a webinar on the topic at the Unit's Homelessness series on 24 October 2024 (all welcome: book here).
At the meeting, which took place on World Homeless Day, the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists announced a new policy statement on homelessness.
Communication needs and support are of particular relevance to the Unit's ongoing NIHR HSDR study exploring the mental capacity assessment of those experiencing multiple exclusion homelessness.
