The REF is carried out approximately every six–seven years to assess the quality of research across UK universities, show the quality and output of research on a domestic and global stage and show the impact research has on the academic environment and our society – highlighting its real-world benefits.
The departments submitted a unit of 36 staff, at 34.1 FTE under Unit of Assessment 33 (Music, Drama, Dance, Performing Arts, Film and Screen Studies).
The assessment consisted of 93 outputs and three impact case studies published over the REF cycle, between 2014 and 2020. Each strand is judged on a scale of 1* to 4*, with 4* denoting world-leading research.
