This month, King’s hosted the 2024 Circle U. General Assembly, bringing together leadership of the nine Circle U. European universities to discuss the next strategic steps of the alliance.

This year marked the launch of a new Knowledge Hub on Artificial Intelligence (adding to the existing Hubs on Climate, Democracy and Global Health) as well as discussions on expanding the Research and Innovation dimension of the Circle U. alliance and embedding Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I) actions within all Circle U. initiatives.

Circle U. is an alliance that aims to create an inclusive, research-intensive, and interdisciplinary alliance that provides a multicultural and multi-lingual student experience.

A new Knowledge Hub for Artificial Intelligence

On an invitation from King’s Vice-Chancellor & President, Professor Shitij Kapur, Presidents and Rectors from the Circle U. universities met to explore AI’s transformative role in education and its potential to enhance student success.

King’s is delighted to host Circle U.'s General Assembly and meetings, underscoring our deep commitment to this dynamic European alliance. Circle U. contributes to our European strategy by bringing together our community of academics, researchers, and students in a shared mission. As we navigate transformative advancements like generative AI in education, partnerships like these are essential to fostering accessible, inclusive, and forward-thinking learning environments. Together, we are better equipped to shape a future-ready education system that benefits everyone.

The new Knowledge Hub on AI is expected to reshape educational content development and Circle U.’s scientific agenda by taking a multidisciplinary approach to delivering education and research. Key to the new Knowledge Hub will also be questions about risks related to the use of AI, and its ethical use in society.

Circle U. will also focus on advancing its Research and Innovation agenda and strengthening support and collaborations between researchers to foster inclusive academic excellence, and ensuring adaptability to meet the diverse needs of students, staff and researchers across the alliance.

About the Circle U. University alliance

As one of the current 64 European University Alliances co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme and Horizon 2020 of the European Commission, Circle U. is led by the University of Oslo (Norway) and, besides King’s, includes seven other research-intensive European universities: Aarhus University (Denmark); Humboldt University (Germany); UCLouvain (Belgium); University of Belgrade (Serbia); University Paris Cité (France); University of Pisa (Italy); and University of Vienna (Austria).

Students, staff, and external partners work together to develop new initiatives for pedagogical innovation and cutting-edge research to address global challenges, focussing on four themes: democracy, climate, global health and AI.

Circle U.’s main priorities are:

  • to facilitate virtual and in-person mobility of staff and students within all partner universities
  • to foster community engagement and impact in education and research
  • to increase student engagement and co-create a sustainable academic ecosystem of the future
