King's alum awarded prestigious scholarship
A King’s student has been awarded a prestigious studentship that will allow him to continue his studies through to doctoral level.
Jonathon Dawes, a Politics, Philosophy and Economics undergraduate at King’s, is set to move to Durham University later this year to begin a master’s in research methods for political science, after which he will begin a doctorate.
The move has been made possible thanks to an award from the Northern Ireland and North East Doctoral Training Partnership (NINE DTP), which will provide funding for Jonathon’s fees and offer a stipend while he completes his studies.
A small number of the NINE DTP studentships are offered each year and applicants have to go through a competitive process to qualify.
Jonathon said: “It was a complete shock when I heard my application had been successful but I’m very pleased and excited. The NINE DTP only had four places available and I’m absolutely delighted to be one of them.”
Jonathon is hoping his PhD will be an extension of his undergraduate dissertation, titled To what extent was the Lawn Tennis Association SERVES Programme Evidence-based?
Dr John Meadowcroft, from the Department of Political Economy at King’s, said: “I am delighted to see Jonathon receive the prestigious award of a scholarship at the NINE DTP to pursue postgraduate study.
“I taught Jonathon in the second-year of his degree and supervised his undergraduate dissertation, I have always been impressed with his intellectual ability, commitment to his studies, and his continual desire to learn. I am sure he will make a great success of this new opportunity.”
NINE DTP is a collaborative enterprise between seven universities across Northern Ireland and the North East of England and is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.
