King's achieves top rankings for Sociology and Social Policy in high profile national university guides
King’s has achieved the number one ranking for Sociology and Social Policy in the Guardian UK University Guide for 2025, and the fifth place ranking for Sociology in the Times Good University Guide 2025
The BA Social Sciences, based in the School of Education, Communication and Society has helped propel King’s up the rankings tables in Sociology and Social Policy (the Guardian), and Sociology (The Times). King’s rose one place from second to first in the Guardian subject rankings and twelve places in the Times subject rankings.
The BA Social Sciences, is now an established and growing programme, taking in its sixth cohort of students in 2024. The rankings follow a strong performance in the National Student Survey where the degree course was second in the Russel Group for average positivity scores.
Yasmin Gunaratnam, current programme director of the BA Social Sciences, commented: “A commitment to engaging with social justice and enabling student participation in all aspects of the degree are central to the BA Social Sciences. Both involve cultivating critical thinking skills, looking beyond the surface, questioning received wisdoms, and working with topical social and political questions and problems.”
“We very much want our students to change the world for the better and the degree offers a space in which they can play with ideas, work out what matters to them and develop their skills and interests for the future. Social Sciences are in a really unique position to contribute to a better world through the invitation to understand and engage with the world differently and with care and an openness to surprises.”
