Hosted at the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Tokyo, Dr Li will collaborate with medical educators and healthcare institutions in Japan to integrate cultural competency into medical education, bridging a critical gap in Japan’s healthcare education.

The fellowship will expand King’s collaborations in Cultural Competency beyond Europe, broadening perspectives in education and research.

While sharing insights from the UK and European contexts, I am eager to learn from the Japanese partners, understand their unique challenges, and exchange ideas on addressing global healthcare equity and social justice challenges. In return, these dialogues will enrich my work at King’s and strengthen the international engagement in the Department of Interdisciplinary Humanities.

Dr Shuangyu Li, Director of King's Cultural Competency

The University of Tokyo is positioning itself as a national leader in promoting cultural competency, recognising its significance in addressing healthcare equity and diversity. Professor Hideki Hashimoto, Dr Li’s host, will facilitate key meetings with other healthcare institutions in Japan and the Japan Society for Medical Education, allowing for nationwide collaboration and knowledge exchange.

During his fellowship, Dr Li will also conduct a comparative study on interpreter-mediated medical consultations between Japan and the UK. He will deliver lectures and workshops for medical students and faculty, participate in academic meetings with key stakeholders across the university, and explore long-term collaborative opportunities between King’s and the University of Tokyo.

Dr Shuangyu Li delivered a workshop on Cultural Competency research for faculty and research students at Mahidol University.

Dr Li’s fellowship follows his recent invited visit to Mahidol University, Thailand, where he explored research and educational collaborations on using Generative AI to support culturally competent communication training for university students. This work with partners in the Global South reflects the decolonisation of knowledge production, fosters multilingualism, and counteracts the dominance of monolingual AI models.
