At a ceremony at the Marriott Hotel, Park Lane on Friday 26 April 2024, students and alumni of the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Palliative Care received awards in two categories at the Student Nursing Times Awards.
Alexx Dixon (MNurs programme Year 2) won the Student Nurse or Midwife of the Year: Clinical Research Award and was also shortlisted for the Mary Seacole Award for Outstanding Contribution to Diversity and Inclusion. This award recognises their commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). They have co-authored several papers related to trans+ healthcare and healthcare for sex workers and have also acted as a representative on the Faculty EDI committee and the Student-Staff Liaison Committee.
Victoria Edleston (BSc Mental Health Nursing), Akira Madams (MSc Adult Nursing) and Kendall Robbins (BSc Adult Nursing), nominated by Mel Maddison and Dr Jocelyn Cornish, won the Outstanding Contribution to Sustainability Award for their work on sustainability projects in the Faculty during their time as nursing students. Victoria, Akira and Kendall were recognised for their work in raising awareness and changing processes around sustainability in the Faculty, particularly with regards to clinical waste produced in clinical sessions, and the disposal of student uniforms.
Staff member Dr Siobhan O’Connor, Senior Lecturer in Education & Research, was shortlisted for University Educator of the Year, nominated by some of her postgraduate nursing students.
Staff in attendance at the event included Shelley Peacock, Senior Lecturer in Nursing Education (AEP), Dr Clive Tobutt, Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing Education, Mel Maddison, Lecturer in Nurse Education, Dr Jocelyn Cornish, Senior Lecturer in Nursing Education, and Dr Mary Raleigh, Associate Dean (Practice Learning).
