Alan joined the QEC Mathematics Department in 1963 and moved to King's in 1985 when the King's/QEC/Chelsea merger took place.
His research was in topology and his most important contribution was a well-received monograph Dimension Theory of General Spaces, published by Cambridge University Press in 1975.
Alan was a well-respected Deputy Head of Department in the early 1990's at what was a difficult time. His chief involvement in the London Mathematical Society was between 1983-1992. During those years he was a member of the LMS Council and of its General Purposes and Programme Committees and held the key post of Meetings and Membership Secretary. This was a major commitment and, when he finally stepped down, the President and the Past President wrote a joint note of appreciation in the LMS Newsletter describing him as "one of the major forces behind the Society over the last decade."
