Dr Valentina Vitiello joins the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering (LIHE)

Dr Vitiello has joined the LIHE team as the Head of Clinical Translation and Governance ahead of the institute launching its inaugural acceleration programme in early 2024.

Dr Valentina Vitiello

Translation of technologies into the NHS for therapy and diagnosis is complex and requires multidisciplinary teams including clinicians, physical scientists, engineers, industry, regulatory advisors, health economists and commercial experts.

As Head of Clinical Translation and Governance at LIHE, Dr Vitiello will oversee these teams and coordinate their activities, from the first-in-human studies to early adoption. This will include forming connections with local and national networks of various clinical specialities to organise the evaluation of cutting-edge technologies at trial stages, which is integral to LIHE's mission. Dr Vitiello was previously the Manager of Specialist Technical Operations at the School and worked closely with the Department of Surgical and Interventional Engineering.

I’m excited to join the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering and to become a key part of an ecosystem designed to help MedTech entrepreneurs avoid common pitfalls and bring their innovations to the clinic as safely and quickly as possible. I am looking forward to working with world-leading clinical experts, cutting-edge innovators and a multi-disciplinary team of experts at LIHE, which is uniquely placed to revolutionise the current approach of translating MedTech from bench to bedside and enable early adoption of technology, ultimately improving patient care.

Dr Vitiello aims to build on the existing clinical translation infrastructures present at King's Health Partners' Trusts, alongside engaging with funding bodies, legal and regulatory teams to develop a robust strategy for the adoption of new technologies into clinical settings.

I am very excited to be welcoming Dr Vitiello onto the LIHE team. With her extensive experience in translating a breadth of novel technologies to the clinic and her exceptional focus on clinical governance and patient safety, she is the ideal person to deepen our collaboration in medical device translation with our existing clinical partners and expand it to new ones, to the benefit of patients. I am looking forward to working with her to complement our excellent LIHE team with her skillset and knowledge so critical to our mission.
