Explore the events happening across King's to mark Black History Month
This year’s theme for Black History Month is 'Reclaiming Narratives,' with events taking place across the University to celebrate Black history and culture, and recognise and correct inaccurate narratives.

Race Equality Network: 'Reclaiming Narratives'
Wednesday 9 October, 18.00-20.30, Macadam Building, Strand Campus
The Race Equality Network (REN) will be holding a two part event to celebrate and explore this year's theme.
Part 1: Reclaiming Histories will look at the role of King's College London in developing colonial education and the work being undertaken at King's Libraries & Collections to decolonise collections and at King’s broadly on decolonial education.
Part 2 will showcase the work of Black Academics and PGR students at King's on what the theme of reclaiming narratives looks like for them in their work.
'Reclaiming Narratives': King's Business School
Thursday 10 October, 18.00-20.00, Bush House, Strand Campus
Join King's Business School to hear an expert panel of speakers explore this year's theme. Chaired by Dr Chiamaka Nwosu, the panel will discuss how we can shine a brighter light on Black stories, voices and history, especially in the world of higher education and modern business.
A Life Less Safe: invitation to a special screening at Brixton Ritzy
Thursday 10 October, 18.00 - 20.00, Ritzy Cinema & Café
As part of Black History Month 2024 and to mark World Mental Health Day, a special screening of A Life Less Safe, a film exploring the experiences of Black and other racially minoritised people living with severe mental and physical health conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic, will be held at Brixton Ritzy cinema.
After the screening, there will be a Q&A and panel discussion featuring participants in the film, researchers, the film’s director and policymakers.
Race Equality Network - Free Black History Walking Tours
Tuesday 15 October, 15.00 - 17.00, Piccadilly Circus to Parliament Square
This tour will walk along some of the most famous streets in the capital, highlighting the evidence of the African presence in London, England, from Roman times to the present day.
Harold Moody Lecture 2024
Wednesday 16 October, 18.00 - 21.00, New Hunt's House, Guy's Campus
The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is proud to host the 2024 Harold Moody Lecture, an evening celebrating the legacy of the great Black Briton, Dr Harold Moody.
The Keynote lecture by Dr Annabel Sowemimo will be followed by a panel discussion on ‘Addressing racism in medical education’ with each panel member discussing the impacts of racism in medical education and how medical educators can address and tackle racism.
Race Equality Network: Reclaiming Narratives in the Arts
Friday 25 October, 18.00 - 20.30, Bush House, Strand Campus
REN will be showcasing what reclaiming narratives looks like in film, music and literature.
The agenda includes:
- A mini-screening with the makers of Iwájú,
- Dr Annabel Sowemimo, author of Divided: Racism, Medicine and Decolonising Healthcare
- Musical Performance from Rachel Huggins
The Race Equality Network, is a community network created and led by dedicated volunteer staff and PGR students at King's. Open to all it supports connections and community for staff and PGR students from racially minoritised backgrounds at King’s.
