The CHoSTM awards provide full tuition fees (home or overseas rates) and a maintenance grant equivalent to that of the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).

Thanks to the generosity of the Arcadia Fund we have been able to offer Hans Rausing Scholarships to outstanding historians of science and technology from the UK and around the world for more than twenty years. Our Rausing scholars, together with our other doctoral students, have benefitted from rigorous, collegial, training and have gone on to make distinguished contributions to our field. If you want to say something fresh about the history of science and technology, join us!

The scholarships are awarded for doctoral research, in two forms. The scholarships can be awarded as a one-plus-three year award, covering one year of MA study at King’s followed by progression to a PhD, or as a three-year award for candidates already holding a relevant Master’s degree. Successful applicants will demonstrate outstanding academic records and research potential in the history of science and/or technology. The history of medicine is not covered. Applications for the +3 award should be submitted by 15 April 2025 via the History Research MPhil/PhD programme. For the 1+3 award, candidates should apply to one of the MA History programmes by 14 April 2025 together with a PhD research proposal. Full details and application guidance are available here

The group’s aim is to research and teach the histories of science, technology and medicine in ways that change understandings of their history, of history in general, and of the world in which we live today. CHoSTM’s work has engaged directly with policy-makers and politicians.
