Professor Anne Rasmussen was among presenters who spoke to delegates at an event which focussed on the working conditions of politicians and issues of harassment and toxicity in politics.

Prof Rasmussen highlighted her recent research which examined the rise of abuse and intimidation aimed at elected officials and, in particular, the double-burden of toxicity faced by female politicians.

The research, published in the American Political Science Review, discussed how toxic behaviour could ultimately hinder women's participation in public debate and democratic engagement overall.

The conference took place on 18 February in Copenhagen and was attended by members of the Danish parliament, representatives from local government across Denmark, civil servants, and academic experts.

As well as presenting her research, Prof Rasmussen also joined a panel debate which discussed the challenges faced by elected officials as well as offering solutions which help ease the burden.
