2025 Global Day of Service a roaring success

Service to society remains one of the founding principles of King’s College London. And events featuring volunteers supporting their local communities in the UK, Malaysia, India and America show that ethos is alive and well in our global alumni community…

Our Global Day of Service is celebrated every year towards the end of March. This acts as a focal point where we celebrate the volunteering activities of our international alumni community, who come together throughout the month to give their time to support worthy causes in their local communities.

And 2025 provided several more amazing examples of members of our alumni family who chose to ‘give something back’...

Malaysia

Our alumni community in Malaysia got creative and painted a colourful mural at Yayasan Chow Kit. This non-profit organisation in Kuala Lumpur offers meals, activities, therapy, case management and educational programmes for at-risk children and teenagers.

The group included Azielia Anne, Tan Choo Teck, Kelvin Miranda, Tengku Qistina, Jayn Kanesarajah, Imran Teh, Arthur Ng Wei Meng, Amanda Choo, Hamza Redzuan, Amirul Haikal, Yan Tong, Ann Khong and Andrew Khoo.

‘It was extremely memorable and all our alumni enjoyed themselves very much,’ says Azielia Anne (International Political Economy, 2017). ‘We even collaborated with a wellness centre to raise funds for this event for the kids.’

Andrew Khoo (Law, 1988) agrees: ‘It was such a wholesome event. Everyone brought their diverse talents for this and it really shows in the outcome.’

The CEO of the children’s centre, Ananti Rajasingam, also attended the event and helped with the art installation. She adds: ‘This is the most thoughtful way one can make an impact and we’re so excited for the kids to experience it!’

India

In Hyderabad in Telangana, India, a group of alumni volunteers facilitated a full-day meals and school stationery drive for 20 orphans at a children’s home managed by Abhita Foundation. Led by alum Stephen Anurag (MSc Public Policy & Management, 2020), the team collaborated with two non-governmental organisations, the Yes We Can youth initiative and We the People India Trust, to produce this venture.

This is the tenth volunteer initiative this group has created. These have included mental health wellbeing events, clothing donation drives and a festive Christmas carol fundraiser. Their activities have involved and impacted more than 1,500 people.

America and the UK

In Washington DC, a group of five King’ alumni volunteered at DC Central Kitchen to prepare food for meal distribution across the district. And they also found time to take a quick picture with the King’s College London banner.

Meanwhile, a team of 13 people in the UK took part in a similar activity at The Felix Project, London’s biggest food redistribution charity. One group worked in the warehouse, ensuring donated surplus food was packed and ready to be sent out to community groups. The other worked in the kitchen, helping chop vegetables and pack fresh meals. Together they helped prepare more than 2,000 meals in one morning.

‘I jumped at the opportunity to help feed those in need and at the same time reduce food waste, via the Felix Project,’ says Andrew Chandiramani (International School for Government, 2023). ‘It’s such a worthwhile initiative and I was glad I was able to take part.’

Maria Guinaldo Vera (Drug Discovery Skills, 2006) adds: ‘The best part was seeing the final result of our work at Felix, where the food was ready for delivery to those in need.’

A global success

‘It’s genuinely uplifting to see so many members of our alumni community sacrifice their time to benefit their wider communities,’ says Abbey Cameron, the Alumni Volunteer Manager at King’s College London.

‘Our institution was founded on the principle of service to society. It’s wonderful to see that value being so clearly demonstrated by members of our alumni community across the globe.

‘We thank each and every person who gave up their time to help these amazing causes.’
