About us

We are the King’s Undergraduate Medical Education in the Community (KUMEC) Team, led by Professor Anne Stephenson. As the Community Campus we deliver GP-based teaching for the GKT School of Medical Education. We are also part of the School of Life Course and Population Sciences, so we have close links with Primary Care Research. We co-ordinate, support and promote medical education in community contexts, working with a network of around 200 teaching general practices and additional independent GP tutors. We aim to develop caring, professional doctors, who can reflect on and direct their own lifelong learning, applying evidence-based guidelines to help patients make informed decisions.

KUMEC team

The KUMEC team is located on the Guy’s Campus in Addison House. It comprises 12 academics and 6 administrative staff. Many of the academic team also have NHS clinical and other medical school commitments. The central team leads on the development and delivery of undergraduate medical education in primary care to our 2,400 King’s medical students.

Our Teaching Network

Our teaching network

The KUMEC community teaching network consists of hundreds of teachers (GPs, nurses, educationalists and practice staff), working in about 200 GP practices, on campus or at the RCGP headquarters in Euston. Teaching practices are mostly situated in and around London but a significant proportion, mainly those who teach students on the final year 8-week placement, can be found in other parts of the UK.

Teaching overview

We have created a large proportion of one-to-one and small group teaching for our learners which allows effective supervision, support, honest, insightful and development feedback, mirroring and role modelling good doctor-patient and teacher-learner relationships. The MBBS Curriculum has an emphasis on exposure to general practice, holistic care, continuity, and developing the learning relationships between our tutors and students within communities of practice. The core GP placements are situated in Stage 2 (Year 2) with a longitudinal placement from September to June and in Stage 3 (Year 5) an 8 week GP block. There is also clinical skill teaching in Stage 2 (Year 3), Quality Improvement Projects in Primary Care settings in Stage 3 (Year 4) and an intercalated BSc in Primary Care between Stage 2 and Stage 3 as well as Student Selected Components and Scholarly Projects delivered by our KUMEC Team.
