Building on a prestigious history, Engineering at King’s is growing. Our vision is to create a vibrant environment that looks to lead and deliver innovation in engineering education and to capture emerging research areas that address new technological and societal challenges. Investment in new facilities, introducing new research areas and adding new undergraduate courses in general engineering from 2020 have launched us on this journey. The centre of King’s engineering is located at the heart of the Strand campus, where the refurbished, historic Quad building houses state-of-the-art facilities. Spanning nearly two centuries King’s has a long and distinguished history in engineering and science. King’s students have learnt from such eminent scientists as James Clerk Maxwell, Charles Wheatstone and Sir William Siemens. King’s re-launched the Department of Engineering in 2019 with a £50m investment in new state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratory facilities that opened in September 2022. The department has approximately 50 academic staff with an equality, diversity and inclusion record to be proud of, with 45% female staff and 42% from non-white backgrounds; the department will grow to 60 academic staff in 2024. The department has successfully achieved recruiting 24% of the incoming undergraduate cohort as female, as well as 34% of postgraduate taught and 50% of PhD students, making a significant contribution to advancing the numbers of women in the field of engineering and representing some of the highest proportion of any engineering department in the UK.
We focus on both discovery research and applied research, leveraging the synergies between conventional engineering and leading-edge technologies to solve the problems of today and those we will face tomorrow. Currently we bring a diversity of perspectives and a variety of skills together in six broad themes: • Communication & Information Engineering • Design & Mechatronics • Manufacturing, Materials & Systems • Signals & Control • Computational Engineering • Data-Centric Engineering We anticipate evolving our portfolio of themes as the Department continues to develop. In addition, the Department hosts the Faculty-wide Net-Zero Centre, which forms the Science and Technology component of the wider King’s Climate and Sustainability initiative.
Engineering research in the Department focuses primarily on the synergies between conventional engineering and leading-edge technologies for example, between computing and telecommunications, robotics and medicine, signal processing and the digital creative media, operations research and sustainable transport, engineering technologies and the circular economy, process engineering and waste to resource technology, heat transfer and Lithium Ion battery safety and between material science and novel sensors for environmental impact. King’s prepares engineers for the 21st century through a wide range of endeavours, including 5G communication, researching advanced materials, building agile vaccine manufacturing platforms, developing quantum and neuromorphic technologies, , using computer vision to recognise human emotion, developing biotechnology in waste water recovery, leading technology policy development for net zero, building new rehabilitation technologies, researching renewable power generation and energy storage and developing mathematical and computational models and platforms across engineering domains. Systems approaches, design thinking and artificial intelligence technologies are pervasive in much of our work alongside mathematical, computational and experimental approaches. We are a diverse, high-energy and exciting community of interdisciplinary engineering researchers.
The education portfolio includes undergraduate degrees in General Engineering and Electronic Engineering, and MSc programmes in Communications, Engineering and Management and Robotics with further scope to develop the portfolio further.
