Role purpose

The Director of Financial Performance is a senior management role in the Finance &Procurement Directorate and a senior management role within the College. Recent experience has shown that Finance teams need to be flexible and be able to respond to rapidly changing environments as we work to achieve the KCL strategy and protect against commercial and financial risks and vulnerabilities. This role will support the Vice President (Finance)/CFO in steering and leading developments in our financial strategy and performance processes, financial resource allocation methodologies and performance reporting, and will lead financial support for our business leaders and managers across the college. The postholder will work collaboratively across King’s supporting academic and professional services colleagues as well colleagues within the Finance Department. King’s is at a pivotal point in the delivery of our strategic objectives and this role will play a critical part in this. King’s is a progressive Russell Group University and has emerged from Covid with a clear strategy, based on our values and our aim to serve. We have seen a period of significant growth and significant academic and estate development, and our financial position is strong. The King’s turnover exceeded £1 billion for the first time in 2021/22, and returned an operating surplus in excess of £40m and our plan is for an expansion to around £1.5 billion by 2025/26, with an operating surplus available for investment of £80m. Our financial strategy supports greater transparency, empowerment and accountability across the college. At every level our financial teams will further improve our culture of financial awareness, stimulate and support greater commercial opportunities and help generate future diverse resources creating a stronger impact for King’s service to society.

This role is part of the Directorate Senior Leadership Team. We are a continually developing service and we operate as One Team, across our financial, commercial and procurement services. Indeed, this is a strong consistent approach in King’s - we aim to be One Team. We continue to develop our networking and engagement with greater development and training opportunities across our professional areas creating professional pathways across the college. The postholder will be a senior member of the Directorate, and must demonstrate our values and support others in their work at all times. This role will manage a team of professional finance staff (c.45) and be a key part of the senior management team in Finance. The Director of Financial Performance will help shape the team and structure, building key supporting roles in strategic financial modelling and resource allocation, management of strategic investment projects and sustainability, and in business partnering for performance across the college. The structure supporting this role is set out broadly below, the main reports include: - Director of Financial Planning and Performance (Academic) - Director of Financial Planning and Performance (Operations) - Director of Corporate Management Accounting - Head of Systems Accounting

Role Profile

The post holder will:

Leadership and Management

• Be an active senior manager within the Directorate Leadership Team supporting developments across our services and be a positive member of the university’s Senior Leadership Team able to lead and manage college wide projects on behalf of the Executive. The postholder should display at all times the values of King’s, and role model these values in their interactions with all colleagues.

Strategy

• Create and maintain strategic financial modelling at University, Faculty and Directorate levels supporting improved, transparent and integrated planning at all levels; based on a 5 year forecast horizon, 3 year rolling budgets and resource allocation methodology. This is in no way an exclusively Finance Department task – there must be active collaboration with academic faculties and professional services departments to produce a sustainable plan, agreed and owned across King’s. Support horizon scanning, scenario planning and financial risk assessment.

Planning

• Working with our aligned Directorate - Strategy, Planning and Analytics (SPA) continue to develop and refine our integrated strategic and financial business planning process (IPP) to achieve strategic goals within agreed 3 year rolling targets and budgets, ensuring that targets and challenges, including efficiencies and sustainability measures are well understood and planned into financial forecasts and accountabilities. Lead the annual budget operation including financial risk assessment and contingency planning to meet our objectives.

Reporting and data

• Support the CFO in the review and delivery of a suite of consistent financial management reporting aligned with strategic and planning/ performance needs at all levels and for all activities. This is a fundamental piece of consultative and renewal work across the college, including Council, for which working across leadership at all levels together with the Finance and Commercial Directorate Senior Management, Financial Accounting and Systems Accounting teams is key. Ensure that financial information is provided to all relevant stakeholders in a timely and accurate manner to enable reliable conclusions to be drawn on financial performance and support decision making at all levels.

Systems

• Review, consider and test integrated systems best able to support our devolved users in business strategy, planning and reporting – developing this as a cross university project working with SPA, the Executive and broader University Senior Leadership and with the IT Department and Systems Accounting Function for technical support.

Faculty and Directorate performance and partnering

• Support the further development of a positive and effective business partnering service for faculties and directorates enabling ownership and accountability in line with strategic objectives and financial targets. Create the space to support operational reviews and efficiency alongside business development and business case appraisal. Create partnerships and networks for financial understanding and training across faculties and directorates supporting engaging networks. Support all areas of King’s to become more efficient and productive.

Directorate

• With the Directorate Senior Leadership Team consider and develop career pathways for Finance, Procurement and Commercial expertise for Kings and assist the implementation of this within our Directorate and across the college • Aligning a consistent and inclusive approach to the operations of the Directorate: Work with the CFO and the Directorate senior leadership to create a consistent approach to internal management and operations including recruitment, equalities and inclusion, training and development including PDR and performance management.

Financial awareness and training

• With the support of the Directorate Business Manager and working across the Directorate leadership with the Chief Accountant and the Chief Procurement Officer, create and maintain a range of materials, on line and otherwise, to provide a suite of training materials to help broaden financial understanding, literacy and networking across the college.

General

• Keep up to date with changes in the sector, service discipline and university in general that may impact on the role. Engage with the sector at this level and within network groups. • Have strong communication and customer service skills and be able to deal with a wide range of seniority of staff, and other key stakeholders. • Play an active part in the senior management of the university, create and maintain excellent relationships with leadership across the university creating a culture of engagement and support at all levels • Play an active part in the Finance &Procurement community and demonstrate a commitment to change, improvement and development both as an individual and in the provision of services to the university and outside stakeholders. • Demonstrate and role model the King’s commitment to Equality, Diversity & Inclusion to empower everyone to participate and contribute fully to the university. • Act as a mentor to staff across all development needs, creating pathways for personal success • Able to form strong relationships with immediate colleagues, customers and 3rd parties using our Principles in Action - Connecting, Supporting, Challenging and Including at all times

This is a senior level appointment. The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to deputise for the CFO and undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post. The Finance Department has successfully transitioned to a hybrid working system, and most colleagues attend our offices at Lavington Street about 2 days a week. It would be expected that the postholder would be on the King’s site an average of 3 days a week, and while predominately the base would be Lavington Street, there will be meetings and opportunities to work on all of the King’s sites. Key relationships will include: President, Senior Vice Presidents, Vice Presidents, Executive Deans, Heads of Schools and Departments, Faculty Directors of Operations, Directorate leads. About the Finance & Procurement Directorate

The Finance & Procurement Directorate comprises some c.140 roles located across many of our campuses in central London. Our main office location is Lavington Street a little distance from London Bridge. The current structure is reflected below 1. Director of Financial Performance has c45 staff in the management accounting teams supporting planning, internal reporting, analysis and linked as business partners to Faculties and central Directorates. 2. The Chief Accountant manages the significant financial services areas with c.65 roles which provide technical and financial accounting, assurance and advisory services together with treasury management and financial processing functions for the whole university. 3. The Chief Procurement Officer has a team of c.30 members of staff in the Procurement Strategy & Services Team supporting procurement and contracts management and performance 4. The Senior Director: New Projects provides key legal and commercial support to business development opportunities across all activities. The Finance & Procurement directorate is currently working as part of a long-term hybrid working trial. This involves, typically, at least 2 days per week on campus with the remainder taking place remotely. Longer term, more regular attendance on campus may be required.

The Chief Accountant manages the significant financial services areas with c.65 roles which provide technical and financial accounting, assurance and advisory services together with treasury management and financial processing functions for the whole university. 3. The Chief Procurement Officer has a team of c.30 members of staff in the Procurement Strategy & Services Team supporting procurement and contracts management and performance 4. The Senior Director: New Projects provides key legal and commercial support to business development opportunities across all activities. The Finance & Procurement directorate is currently working as part of a long-term hybrid working trial. This involves, typically, at least 2 days per week on campus with the remainder taking place remotely. Longer term, more regular attendance on campus may be required.

King’s Health Partners (KHP) Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC) is a pioneering collaboration between King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’, King’s College Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trusts. King's Strategic Vision 2029 set out bold ambitions for the future of King’s as we look towards our 200th anniversary: to make the world a better place through our excellence in teaching, research and our service to society. Launched in 2017, Vision 2029 outlines transformative initiatives aiming to broaden the base of King's, extend our reach, expand access, deliver an extraordinary student experience and strengthen how well we work together. Over the last five years, we have developed new areas of outstanding quality and built on our existing areas of strength across Arts, Sciences, Engineering, Health and Life Sciences.
