About us

King’s College London has secured a £10M investment to create the UK Smart Trials Hub.  The Hub, the first of its kind, is a research facility that will study diverse patient data and samples to understand the mechanisms behind an individual’s response to treatments. The data generated in the Hub in partnership with clinical, academic and pharmaceutical partners will help to develop targets for and approaches to treat complex diseases.

The facility will house state-of-the-art analytical platforms and AI-driven techniques to define characteristics of individual patients' diseases. This innovative approach enables accurate predictions of which patients will benefit from existing and new therapies – critical for designing efficient, cost-effective and inclusive clinical trials.

About the role

​​The Facility Manager will play a critical role in ensuring that the physical environment and infrastructure supporting this groundbreaking facility are efficiently maintained and optimally utilised. As a Facility Manager, you will oversee the day-to-day operations of research and laboratory spaces, ensuring the safety, functionality, and compliance of the facilities with regulatory standards.

This position will involve close collaboration with the research teams, academic staff, and external contractors to facilitate seamless operation and provide logistical support for the successful implementation of the programme.  The role requires a professional with strong operational and managerial expertise, excellent communication skills and capable of leading and coordinating a multi-disciplinary team.

This is a full time (35 Hours per week), offered on an indefinite contract.

About you

Essential criteria

1.       Demonstrable experience in core research facility management, encompassing integration of new methodologies into operations and decision-making processes.

2.       Experience in one or more of the technical areas of proteomics, transcriptomics, imaging, histology and/or high dimensional data

3.       Proven track record of managing complex facilities with multiple stakeholders, including in a high-demand, regulated environment, while aligning facility operations with organizational strategic priorities and sustainability goals.

4.       Experience managing budgets and vendor contracts, with a focus on cost control, efficiency, and identifying opportunities for long-term financial sustainability and operational improvements.

5.       Strong leadership and team management skills, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and ownership of driving staff development.

6.       Excellent communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including academic and industry researchers, contractors, and senior management, ensuring awareness of and alignment with organisational initiatives and risk management strategies.

7.       Knowledge of university research funding environment and full economic costing (TRAC fEC) regulations for facilities, with an emphasis on sustainable resource allocation and identifying opportunities for financial efficiency and long-term viability.

8.       Strong interest and proven ability in the development and application of innovative scientific methods and techniques, with a focus on enhancing sustainability, efficiency, and longevity in research operations, while continuously designing new methods and refining existing techniques to improve research outcomes.

Desirable criteria

1.      Membership of a relevant professional body is desirable e.g. Institute of Science and Technology, Royal Society of Chemistry, Royal Society of Biology
