About us
The Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES) is committed to strengthening interdisciplinary research. We are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to work on a joint project between Prof Rachel Bearon (Professor of Mathematical Biology, and Exec Dean of the NMES) and Prof Maddy Parsons (Professor of Cell Biology in the Randall Centre for Cell & Molecular Biophysics).
This project aligns with the ambitions of King’s Interdisciplinary Science, a £45.5 million in science talent, research, education and infrastructure to accelerate growth, interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
About the role
The purpose of the role is to develop new mathematical models which capture details of the physics and biochemistry of living tissue, and incorporate the rich data generated through cutting-edge cell-imaging techniques. The role holder will be based in the Mathematics department, and work closely with experimentalists based in the Randall Centre for Cell & Molecular Biophysics.
The role holder will be expected to develop mathematical models which incorporate complex data and undertake numerical simulations of the models to generate experimentally testable predictions that have clinical relevance.
The role holder will be expected to display initiative and independence – in developing & implementing the mathematical models, and in relationship building with researchers from different academic disciplines both within King’s and internationally.
The role holder will be expected to communicate their results through publications & presentations to a range of audiences.
This is a full time post, and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 2 years.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
Essential criteria
1. PhD awarded (or near completion) in Mathematical Sciences or related area
2. Accepted research publications in peer reviewed conferences and/or journals.
3. Strong experience in developing numerical simulations of models of biological or physical systems.
4. Effective communication (oral and written) skills, ability to write research reports and papers in style accessible to interdisciplinary academic audiences.
5. Ability to work independently and as part of a team on research programmes.
6. A demonstrable interest in research in health & life sciences
Desirable criteria
1. Experience of working on cell imaging
2. Experience of public engagement
3. Experience of working with multi-modality data sets
4. Interest in developing skills in AI & Machine Learning

* Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.
