About the Department of Psychology

Since the Department of Psychology was founded in 1950, it has carried on a distinguished programme of research, teaching and clinical practice, with a long-standing link with the  South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. In 2004, the psychology sections of Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine merged with the Department, creating one of the world’s largest groupings of clinical and health psychologists. Today, Psychology is one of the largest departments in the IoPPN.

About the Faculty

The IoPPN is a Faculty of King's College London and the largest academic community in Europe devoted to the study and prevention of mental illness and brain disease.

The complementary roles of the IoPPN are: (i) to pioneer research into new and improved ways of understanding and treating mental illness and brain disease; (ii) to offer advanced research training for psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists and other scientific and paramedical workers.  The IoPPN's greatest strength is the interdisciplinary nature of both its research strategy and educational activities, providing unique opportunities for students and staff.

About the role

The primary purpose of this role is to contribute to the advancement of research on anxiety interventions by developing and implementing experimental tasks, under the guidance of supervisors. The role involves recruiting and obtaining consent from volunteers with high anxiety levels, ensuring the study meets the needs of those with lived experience of anxiety, and tailoring materials for diverse ethnic and socio-demographic backgrounds. The successful applicant will run experiments, manage clinical risk, conduct high-quality research, and maintain data integrity and security. Additionally, they will write reports, perform data entry, attend research and supervision meetings, conduct interviews, and support participants in completing the research protocol.

There are two positions available, both will be offered on a full-time, fixed term contracts for 3 years.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. Degree in psychology at least at 2.i level or higher
  2. Experience running psychology experiments and the ability to resolve problems that are critical to the set-up and running of a large-scale online experiment and help plan to avoid them.
  3. Experience in working with anxious people
  4. Promotion of effective multi-disciplinary team working using a flexible, adaptable team-working attitude including the ability to use their own initiative.
  5. Ability to show attention to detail and high standards of accuracy in all aspects of work.
  6. Excellent telephone manner, letter, report and scientific writing skills
  7. Experience of PPIE involvement in research and dissemination
  8. Excellent IT skills in the following areas (word processing, communication software, STRATA/SPSS, internet searching, Endnote, spreadsheets)

Desirable criteria

  1. A Masters in psychology or mental health
  2. Experience of research in cognition and emotion, and/or cognitive bias modification
