About the role

A Cardiovascular Research Associated/Fellow position is available in the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine and Sciences, under the supervision of Dr Haotian Gu, to work on a British Heart Foundation and NIHR jointly funded project “Evaluation of First-Phase Ejection Fraction (EF1) in Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (CRT)”.

The post relates to research on a novel Echocardiographic measure of early left ventricular systolic function – first phase ejection fraction in patients undergoing CRT– an effective treatment for patients with advanced heart failure. Specifically, the post holder will have a major role in a UK multi-centre randomised controlled trial that is designed to determine whether EF1 guided CRT optimisation improves response to CRT compared to the current optimisation strategies.

The Research Associate / Fellow will assist in study co-ordination and performing echocardiography, vascular and other assessments. The work will involve day to day contact with adult patients in a clinical setting, performing physiological measurements and data analysis. The post holder is expected to be competent in performing and reporting clinical and research echocardiography examinations independently, a British Society of Echocardiography Adult Transthoracic Accreditation or equivalent is essential. Previous experience with clinical trial is desirable not essential as training will be provided but the applicant must have an aptitude to work in a multidisciplinary team and with patients.

The work will be based mainly in the Clinical Research Facility, at St Thomas’ Hospital. As part of the study, the post holder will be expected to travel to other study sites to perform study related investigations. 

This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an a fixed term contract until 31/10/2027.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. PhD in a subject relevant to cardiovascular research or equivalent clinical experience  
  2. British Society of Echocardiography Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography Accreditation or equivalent  
  3. Clinical echocardiographic experience – equivalent to NHS Band 7 
  4. Knowledge of cardiovascular physiology  
  5. Good written and presentation skills 
  6. Good IT skills 
  7. Experience in cardiovascular research management

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience with vascular ultrasound 
  2. Experience in grant application  
  3. Experience in conference presentation 
  4. Experience in research publication
