About Us

This is a great secondment opportunity for someone working in the UK HE sector and wishing to expand your skills and knowledge. You might be in a programme administration, Estates/Facilities or another area. IIn this role, you will learn the foundation of how a department operates as well as what it is like to work in a library.

King’s Language Centre is part of the Centre for International Education and Languages and provides language tuition to King’s students via assessed language modules and postgraduate-only modules, short courses and evening programmes open to the public, and language tuition for prestigious external institutions and organisations.

This role will be based at the Language Resources Centre, Strand Campus, and provide student facing services for all language learners. You will work within a small team and have opportunity to supervise student workers.

About the role

The Language Resources Centre is looking for a professional, who brings a commitment to quality and consistently delivers excellent customer service, to join the Business Support Team as Business Support Officer.

This post will play a key role in the student language learning experience with the King’s Language Centre.

The role encompasses the following areas:

  • Front-line support, interacting with students, staff and other users at the Language Resources Centre, a small language library with a collection of around 6000 materials.
  • Operational support for the delivery of the Language Centre’s  services including managing events, speaking practice scheme and supervising student workers within the Language Resources Centre.
  • Course administration for the Language Centre’s Tailor-Made Courses (private language tuition).
  • Marketing & Communications support, managing event promotions, social media content, updating our intranet and extranet, and staff and student communications.
  • Departmental Business Support, including maintaining/auditing departmental asset registers, handling purchase and sales invoices, providing IT/Estates and Health & Safety support.
  • External staff engagement support including organising external conference & events attendance (eg. booking travel and accommodation) and assisting academic leads to host external facing conferences at King’s.
  • Human Resources Support, providing assistance with pay/expense queries, staff recruitment support and staff induction support.
  • You may be asked to work in the evenings and Saturday for special occasions (as part of the standard 35-hour week).

This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered on a fixed term contract until 16 June 2025 (or on return of the substantive post holder)

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: 

Essential criteria

1.        Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, able to interact with a wide variety of people in a professional and assured manner.

2.        An excellent track record of offering service delivery with a problem-solving mindset, able to comprehend complex situations clearly, and use initiative to resolve issues.

3.        Excellent IT skills, including the use of electronic resources, MS Office applications and databases.

4.        Excellent communication skills and attention to detail, including the appropriate use of English in formal documents, professional emails and writing for the web.

5.        Competent in managing complex data and generating user friendly reports.

6.        Demonstrable ability to work independently and pro-actively, multi-task and to balance competing priorities in a busy, pressurised work environment.

7.        Ability to regularly review processes and propose improvements.

8.        Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Desirable criteria

9.      An understanding of business and/or income generating activities.

10.   Understanding of the Higher Education sector.

11.   Interest in / experience of language learning or teaching and/or supporting language practice.
