This event will explore the future of nuclear energy, with a focus on how the planned global expansion can be achieved in a safe and secure way. Speakers will discuss specific initiatives and the challenges and opportunities that new technologies such as small modular reactors (SMR) pose.

About the panel
Dr Christopher Hobbs (Chair) is a Professor in Science and International Security within the War Studies Department at King’s College London, and Director of the King’s Institute for Applied Security Studies (KIASS). He is also the Director of the UK’s Nuclear Security Capacity Building Programme. He has published widely on nuclear security, non-proliferation, intelligence and verification issues, including the Oxford University Press Handbook of Nuclear Security (2023).
Scott Roecker is the vice president of NTI’s (Nuclear Threat Initiative) Nuclear Materials Security Program. He focuses on work to reduce the risks associated with nuclear and radiological materials through several NTI projects, including the Global Dialogue on Nuclear Security Priorities, the NTI Nuclear Security Index, and the Nuclear Scaling Imitative. Before joining NTI in 2021, Scott worked in the United States government for more than 15 years, including as the director for Nuclear Threat Reduction at the National Security Council and several management positions in the U.S. Department of Energy focusing on securing and reducing stockpiles of special nuclear materials.
Margarita Kalinina-Pohl is the Director of the CBRN Security Program and the Non-proliferation Education Program at the James Martin Centre for Non-Proliferation Studies. Her research interests include problems of radiological security in Central Asia and other issues related to nuclear security and non-proliferation.
Dr Ross Peel is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Science & Security Studies. In this role, he leads research activities on nuclear security and safeguards for novel nuclear power plant technologies and examines the role of nuclear power plants in war and as tools of international diplomacy. His work supports a range of countries globally as they seek to build their first nuclear power plants, through a variety of training events and expert workshops.
