Celebrate Black History Month with the King's Race Equality Network (REN).
The theme for Black History Month this year is reclaiming narrative and we will be showcasing what reclaiming narratives looks like in film, music and literature.
The event will be hosted by Sylvie Carlos – PGR Harold Moody Scholar, Sylvie is a multi-award-winning radio/podcast producer and consultant who has unapologetically focused on amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities, with a particular interest in Black-British stories.
This event is open to staff, students and external guests.
Mini-screening with the makers of Iwájú,
Iwájú is an all-new afrofuturistic limited series from Kugali and Disney Animation, set in in Lagos, Nigeria. The series explores themes of inequality and class divide, which director and Kugali co-founder Ziki Nelson described as "the everyday reality of life in Nigeria and other parts of the world.
REN are proud to welcome Kugali Chief Executive Officer Hamid Ibrahim, Creative Director Ziki Adeola and President Tolu Olowofoyeku for a mini-screening and Q&A.
Dr Annabel Sowemimo: Divided: Racism, Medicine and Decolonising Healthcare
Dr Annabel Sowemimo is a doctor, academic, activist and writer. Annabel is a part-time PhD candidate, Harold Moody Scholar and lecturer at King’s College London, with her research focusing on the experiences of Black women in Britain with fertility control methods. Annabel firmly believes that healthcare should be about empowering people with knowledge to make informed choices about their bodies. She spends her spare time campaigning on reproductive justice, against NHS cuts and improving healthcare for marginalised groups.
Annabel’s first book Divided: Racism, Medicine and Decolonising Healthcare was published by Profile Books/Wellcome Collection in April 2023 and was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize for Political Writing.
Musical Performance from Rachel Huggins
Rachel Huggins is a Contemporary R&B/Soul artist from London. Rachel has been two-time finalist in the BBC’s Gospel Choir of the Year competition, featured as a backing vocalist for Billy Ocean, sang the National Anthem for Nelson Mandela and performed at festivals such as Glastonbury, Green Man, Kendal Calling and Secret Garden Party.
When not performing, she’s also currently finishing an MA in Culture, Language and Identity in Education at Goldsmiths, University Of London.
