Public Lecture: Rigour and Justice in Research for Health

We are honored to host Dr. Seye Abimbola for a public lecture titled "Rigour and Justice in Research for Health." Dr. Abimbola will discuss themes from his forthcoming book, "The Foreign Gaze: Essays on Global Health,". With expert commentary by Drs Catherine Kyobutungui (African Population and Health Research Center) and Samah Jabr (George Washington University), this event is dedicated to exploring the intersection of knowledge and justice in global health, critically examining how knowledge production can perpetuate systemic injustices.
Funded by the King’s-Australia Partnership Seed Fund, the event is co-organized by King’s Global Health Institute (Prof. Melanie Abas) and the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (Prof. Anne Pollock and Drs Nancy Tamimi and Cristian Montenegro).
About the Presenters
Dr. Seye Abimbola
Dr. Seye Abimbola is an Associate Professor at the School of Public Health, University of Sydney. He is a leading global voice in the transformation of global health. His research centers on health system governance, the role of community engagement in health system interventions, and the dynamics of knowledge production in global health. Between 2016 and 2024 he served as Editor in Chief of BMJ Global Health, opening a thriving space for critical conversations about equity and inequity in global health knowledge practices.
Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi
Dr. Catherine Kyobutungi is the Executive Director of the African Population and Health Research Center and co-Director of the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) based in Nairobi, Kenya. Catherine has a medical background and is a trained epidemiologist with research interests in Non-Communicable Diseases and Health Systems Strengthening. She has designed and tested service delivery models for resource-constrained settings such as slum settings and is a strong advocate for the societal benefit of research beyond traditional research outputs. At APHRC, she has strengthened approaches to policy engagement and advocacy to ensure timely and effective uptake of evidence in decision making. She is the Editor-in-Chief for PLOS Global Public Health
Dr. Samah Jabr
Dr Samah Jabr MD is a renowned Palestinian psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and writer and the former Head of the Mental Health Unit, Palestine Ministry of Health. She has written extensively about the psychological consequences of the Israeli occupation and genocidal aggression in Palestine. Her areas of interest include mental health, colonialism and universal human rights. She is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at George Washington University.
Event Format
The evening will commence with a keynote lecture by Dr. Seye Abimbola based on his recent book “The Foreign Gaze: Essays on Global Health” (IRD, 2025), followed by expert commentary from Drs. Catherine Kyobutungi and Samah Jabr. The presentations will culminate in a dynamic panel discussion, allowing for audience interaction to further explore the themes of epistemic justice and global health inequities.
