India has recently declared operationalization of INS Arihant, India’s first SSBN, with completion of its first deterrent patrol in Nov 2018. In future, India has plans to develop four to five SSBNs and six SSNs. India’s development of a large nuclear submarine force will have damaging effects for deterrence and crisis stability in South Asia. Deployment of ready-to-fire nuclear warheads in Indian Ocean is not only a matter of concern for the India Ocean littoral states, but also for the international community.
