The 2012 Latin Play was Ludus Danielis, a 12th century work based on some of the colourful events from the book of Daniel. Some time around Christmas 1140 AD, the students of Beauvais cathedral wrote and first performed the play. The play was performed in the original Latin, with English surtitles.
The books of the Bible were joyously alive in the Middle Ages, and none more so than the book of Daniel. The handwriting on the wall, the prophet untouched by lions in their den, the proud king humbled who eats grass, the angel who seizes Habbakuk by the hair – these stories are constantly retold, in words and pictures, throughout the Christian world. In Beauvais, they became drama, music and verse, full of hope and humour.
We hope to bring this joyous spectacle back to life on 30th March. Please join us in the Court of Babylon, and the Lions’ Den. The performance will begin at 7:30 pm in King's Chapel, Strand Campus and there will be suggested admission donation of £5. It will be followed by reception in the department on the 8th Floor of the Strand Building.
Direction and production is by students from the MA in Text and Performance at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Please direct any enquires to history@kcl.ac.uk.
