You are invited to celebrate the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives' 60th birthday on Friday 10th May.

In 1964 Sir Michael Howard - who two years previously had founded the War Studies Department at King's College London - established a Centre for Military Archives at King's. The Centre’s remit was simple: it would collect the papers of senior defence personnel of the twentieth century. The official launch of this archive was timed for this year in order to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

In 1973, the archive was renamed the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives in honour of Sir Basil Liddell Hart, whose own extraordinary collection of over 1000 boxes of papers is still the single largest, and one of the most often used, in the LHCMA.

*

In those intervening years we have gathered the personal papers of over 800 senior defence personnel.

The 10th May marks our official birthday, and we want to celebrate this landmark day. We are holding an Open House in our archive reading room where we will have some items from our collection available for viewing. We will also be livestreaming a talk by our MA History Intern about his research into one of our collections - that of Tom Wintringham.
