Breathing Between the Lines: COPD Physiology and Patient Care

Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the three leading causes of death globally, and one of the commonest causes of emergency hospital admissions in the UK. Despite optimal pharmacological therapy, many individuals with COPD continue to live with disabling breathlessness and impaired health-related quality of life. This lecture will discuss some of the pulmonary and extra-pulmonary physiological manifestations in COPD, and how understanding these are critical for the diagnosis and management of individuals with COPD.

Journey across continents – making the dream a reality

Abstract

As a boy, the sight of my uncle in the uniform of an Air Force officer made me dream of the skies and flight. A medical career however beckoned, and slowly, after the frustrations of early years, the path of Surgery opened. A new flight-plan evolved. Crossing continents to pursue specialist training, the accidental development an academic surgery focus led to a Senior Lecturer/Consultant Surgeon role in Leeds. Exploring the transplantation of marginal grafts, developing minimally invasive 3-D liver and pancreatic surgery, my career led to London and King’s. Mentorship, friendship and an inquisitive nature coupled with hard work resulted in a diverse career in academia, education full of life lessons. Reaching for the skies was replaced by reaching for the scalpel. The journeys end remains uncharted.

Biography

My background in both HPB and Transplant Surgery has been honed in both India and the United Kingdom. I was appointed as a Consultant at Leeds Teaching Hospitals in 2002 and moved to King’s College Hospital, London in 2013.

I developed minimally invasive HPB surgery at King’s and was an invited International Expert at the European Laparoscopic Liver and Pancreatic resection Consensus Conferences. I have a major interest in Transplant Oncology and Peri-Transplant intervention for Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.

I was the immediate Past President of the Great Britain Chapter of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. Currently, I am the President of the British Transplantation Society and was invited by the UK Secretary of Health, to the ‘National Organ Utilisation Group’, to improve organ utilisation in the UK.
