Driving Inclusion and Diversity in AI Innovation

This unconference-style session will facilitate interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration on diversity and inclusion in AI, to foster a shared commitment to inclusion and diversity in AI innovation. Aiming to bring together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers from diverse disciplines, the session aims to explore shared challenges, exchange best practices, and inspire collaborative approaches to equitable AI development.

The session will open with introduction to inclusion and diversity in AI innovation. Participants will then propose discussion topics they are passionate about within these themes. Breakout Groups will form around these themes to allow for facilitated discussion. Active participation and cross-disciplinary knowledge sharing is encouraged. Groups will reconvene to share their insights, outline collaborative project ideas, and suggest strategies for advancing diversity and inclusion in AI research and innovation. Outputs will include concrete next steps to develop shared commitment to inclusion and diversity in AI innovation.

Speakers

Dr Nessa Keddo is a Senior Lecturer in Culture, Media and Creative Industries (Global Majority Identities) in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, King’s College London, and is also the Department’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Lead. Throughout her career, Nessa has pioneered EDI strategies and operating plans in both Higher Education and industry as a Research Director and Consultant.

Dr Virginia Crisp is a Reader in Media Industries and Cultures and the Head of the Department of Culture, Media and Creative Industries in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, King’s College London. Virginia is the co-founder (with Dr Gabriel Menotti Gonring) of the Besides the Screen Network, a network that brings together academics, filmmakers, artists and industry professionals from across the globe to consider the transformation of audiovisual media practices.

Dr Rafie Cecilia is a Lecturer in CMCI, Museum & Gallery Studies in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, King’s College London. Her research explores affordances of AI as assistive technology in the cultural sector and in higher education. During her academic career, Rafie has also worked as access and inclusion consultant and audience researcher for several museums and institutions, including the Wellcome Collection, the British Museum, the Science Museum Group, the Science Gallery, the Fitzwilliam Museum, and the Chau Chak Wing Museum (Sydney).

King's Festival of Artificial Intelligence

This event is part of the King’s Festival of Artificial Intelligence. Running from Tuesday 20 May to Saturday 24 May, the free, five-day festival brings together a diverse line-up of experts to consider critical questions about artificial intelligence in the context of healthcare, education, sustainability, policy, and creativity.
