About this meeting

This meeting will explore the many ways and times the word ‘community’ has been used in the language of social work over recent decades – most famously ‘community social work’ in the 1980s, but variously from ‘community development’ in the 1960s to ‘strengthening community capacity’ (and the like) today.

What has been meant; what were the aspirations; what happened in reality; what was the learning.

Speakers

Four speakers will introduce their different experiences and perspectives prompting a discussion among attendees:

  • Mike Burt, Visiting Professor and author of ‘A History of the Roles and Responsibilities of Social Workers’
  • Annette Holman, former Social Work lecturer
  • Barbara Hearn OBE, former National Institute for Social Work Community Social Work Network
  • Peter Beresford OBE, Visiting Professor, writer and campaigner

Importantly also, Annette Holman and Barbara Hearn will give us opportunities to celebrate the work and influences of Bob Holman & Gerry Smale, both who sadly died too young.

This is a Social Work History Network event.
