Defence Academy, Shrivenham, Swindon

28AprDSD RSS Event Combat Motivation and Morale in British Empire Armies in the Two World Wars

Speaker: Professor Gary Sheffield

The Defence Studies Department (DSD) is pleased to invite you to the next instalment of the DSD Research Seminar Series, featuring Professor Gary Sheffield. He will be giving a talk entitled ‘Combat Motivation and Morale in British Empire Armies in the Two World Wars’, followed by a Q&A session and refreshments.

In this talk, based on research for his forthcoming book, Gary Sheffield looks at combat motivation and morale in the British, Australian, New Zealand, South African, Canadian and Indian Armies in 1914-18 and 1939-45. Rejecting the idea of a ‘universal soldier’, he explores the commonalities and differences between different armies, different campaigns and different wars. Mixing military, social and cultural history, this talk engages with recent research, addressing such factors as fear, panic, fatigue, leadership, and identity, and makes some suggestions for future research.

Please note: This event will be held live in person at the JSCSC, UK Defence Academy and online via Microsoft Teams. Click here to register!
