Talk title: “A Lay Health Worker intervention to improve adherence in COPD: implementation of recruitment and training by pulmonary rehabilitation teams"
Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR), an exercise based treatment, is the most effective treatment for the symptoms and disability of people with COPD. Uptake and completion is poor at 40% of referred patients. We are testing the effectiveness of the support by trained lay health worker volunteers, themselves patients with COPD who have completed PR, in improving uptake and adherence. The process of the intervention from training of staff to the lay health workers interaction with patients will be reported.

Talk title: "Preoperative markers of inflammation and renal function predict postsurgical mortality in frail hip fracture patients"
Hip fractures are the common result of falls in the elderly and in frail patients they result in excess mortality which not accounted for by age or comorbidities. We have investigated in a longitudinal cohort the value of preoperative circulating markers in predicting mortality and incidence of acute kidney injury in patient in frail individuals who suffered a hip fracture. We discuss important clinical implications for the assessment of renal function in this group of patients.
