“People migrate from one place to another, and as they move, their bonds of love with the place they come from continue like spider webs.”

Bonds Beyond Borders Workshop with Artist Liz Hingley

As part of The SIM Project, artist and anthropologist Liz Hingley leads the Bonds Beyond Borders workshop at King's College London. Participants can book or drop in for a 30 mins slot to engage in a hands-on activity, stamping a significant number onto a SIM-sized metal plate and attaching it to a large world map. This borderless map visually represents their personal communication networks, linking places of belonging through the symbol of the SIM card.
The workshop explores the intricate ties between smartphones, mobility, and belonging, with the SIM card as a powerful metaphor for these connections. It is part of Lost & Found: Stories of Sanctuary and Belonging, a free public programme of arts and ideas presented by King’s Culture.
The SIM Project, created in collaboration with people who have experienced displacement, highlights the smartphone SIM card as a critical tool for fostering both local and international relationships. An exhibition of the projects will be on display in the Curiosity Cabinet until Autumn 2025.
The map was previously featured as part of the London Design Festival at the V&A in 2024.
