The VLCC Betelgeuse exploded on 8 January 1979 at the Whiddy Island Oil Terminal, Ireland. Fifty people died at the time and a further death occurred during the salvage operation. Despite other serious tanker casualties during this period, this incident was exceptional and not just because of the number of deaths. The Betelgeuse was operated by the oil major Total S.A., and failure of the ship's structure during the discharge of the oil cargo was blamed for the explosion. Only 27 bodies were recovered.

Even now, more than 30 years later, anger remains among families of the victims. A campaign group is demanding a formal state apology. This event will explore why multiple investigations, including a public inquiry, have failed to resolve the issues and whether there are implications for maritime accident investigations more generally.
