Maximise natural light
Whenever possible, make the most of natural light in your study area. Position your desk near a window to reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day. Natural light not only saves energy but can also enhance your focus and mood. When additional light is needed, opt for energy-efficient LED desk lamps to minimise electricity use.
Adjust your laptop and phone usage
Your laptop and phone are essential tools for studying, but they can also consume a lot of energy if not used efficiently. Start by adjusting the brightness on your screens to a comfortable but lower level - this reduces energy use and is gentler on your eyes. Enable energy-saving modes on your devices to extend battery life and minimise unnecessary power use.
Enable power-saving modes
Set your devices to automatically enter sleep mode after a few minutes of inactivity. When charging your devices, unplug them as soon as they’re fully charged. Chargers left plugged in continue to draw electricity even when not in use, adding to wasted energy.
Adopt Smart Habits
Make it a habit to turn off devices when they’re not needed. If you’re taking a break, power down your laptop or switch it to sleep mode. For longer periods, shut it down completely.
Charge efficiently
Don’t leave your devices plugged in overnight. Charge them only when necessary and unplug once full.
By adopting simple energy-saving habits in your study spaces, you can help lower the University’s energy footprint while fostering sustainable practices for life. Every study session is an opportunity to make a difference - let’s save energy together!
