Energy Saving Tips At Home

Living in halls of residence or shared houses offers plenty of opportunities to adopt energy-saving habits that helps both the environment and your wallet. By making small, simple changes to your daily routine, you can contribute to reducing energy consumption.

Switch off and unplug
One of the easiest ways to save energy is to turn off the lights and appliances when they are not in use. Leaving devices on standby still consumes energy, so unplug chargers, laptops, and other electronics when you have finished using them. These small actions can have a big impact over time.

Use energy-efficient bulbs
Swap traditional light bulbs for energy-efficient LEDs. They use significantly less electricity and last longer, making them a cost-effective and sustainable choice for your living space.

Save water
Energy isn’t just about electricity - heating water takes up a large share of energy use. Simple actions like taking shorter showers and turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can help conserve both water and energy. Don’t forget about that dripping tap which can also be wasteful.

Smarter laundry habits
Wash clothes at lower temperatures (30o) and air-dry them when possible. It’s energy-saving and gentle on your wardrobe.

Use power strips
Power strips are a great way to make saving energy easier. With one switch, you can turn off multiple devices at once, ensuring they don’t draw any power when not in use. Smart power strips can even detect when devices go into standby mode and cut off their power automatically.

Thermostat control
If your living space has a thermostat, use it wisely. Keep the temperature at a comfortable level and consider turning it down a degree or two - small adjustments can lead to noticeable energy savings over time.

By incorporating these habits into your daily life, you can make a positive difference in reducing energy use.
