Beginning in 2007, Earth Hour is known for its symbolic "lights off" in support of our planet and raising awareness of the climate crisis and the small actions we can all take that come together to demonstrate real impact. This year as part of The Big Switch Off, King's will be participating by switching off non-essential external lighting across some of our buildings from 20.30 to 21.30 on Saturday, 28 March, joining many other landmarks and participating sites across London in demonstrating a commitment to our planet.
But Earth Hour is about more than switching off lights on big buildings. It's an opportunity to show your commitment to caring for our planet by "giving an hour for Earth". Make an impact by doing something - anything - positive for the planet.
Looking for ideas on how you can give an hour for Earth?
You can reconnect with nature, learn more about the environment, get involved in biodiversity or even inspire others to act, as long as you’re using one hour to make a meaningful impact to the environment, you'll be helping make change.
You could
- Head out for a weekend walk, taking the scenic route, or even cycle to your destination
- Spend an hour in nature, practising mindfulness or meditation, or simply reconnecting
- Volunteer with an environmental organisation
- Get a group together and go plogging - combining picking up litter with jogging, walking or hiking
- Get crafty and try your hand at upcycling - whether its fashion or furniture, making something new out of something old is a great way to support a cyclical economy
