Enhancing the learning and teaching environment at King’s
Transforming Assessment for Students at King’s (TASK) launched in June 2024 to improve how students and staff experience the practice and process of assessment.
We know that, amongst the positive and effective assessment practices taking place across the University, there are opportunities to enhance the role of assessment as part of the learning experience.
Assessment at King’s is enjoyable, engaging and a valuable part of the learning process.
Students are confident that the assessment process is fair and transparent and that they are being assessed on the right knowledge and skills at the right time. They are not overburdened by the quantity and timing of assessments and move forward usefully because feedback is timely and relevant.
Staff have a reduced workload around assessment and offer meaningful discussion of the purpose of assessment and feedback early in a module.
King’s is proud of its approach to assessment & feedback as part of its forward-thinking reputation. It is known for inclusion, challenge and support, where staff are able to deliver high quality, impactful learning experiences.
The framework sets out the principles which underpin effective assessment design and practice. Collectively these will transform assessment at King’s by ensuring that assessments are fair, valid and support student learning. The principles also provide for the ongoing need to ensure assessment validity and robustness, whilst allowing for change and adaptation in a fast-moving technology landscape. The Framework is flexible and can be tailored in exceptional cases where necessary deviations apply.
Work is underway to support faculties to align their assessment practices with the framework. Key to this is a reduction in assessment volume and better curation of optional modules, as well as a reduction in deadline bunching.
The Assessment and Feedback Framework was launched at the King's Education Conference on 13 June 2024, presented by Vice Chancellor Shitij Kapur, Professor Sam Smidt (Academic Director of King's Academy), Professor Rachel Mills (Senior Vice President - Academic) and Professor Adam Fagan (Vice President - Education and Student Success).
