Virginia Woolf Building (22 Kingsway)

Refurbishment for the Virginia Woolf building is now complete.

The name honours one of the university's most famous former students, the writer, novelist and critic Virginia Woolf, who was a student at the former King's Ladies' Department where she took classes in Greek, Latin, history and German between 1897 and 1902.

The successful refurbishment has even sparked positive feedback from the King's community.

'It was immediately apparent that the office space was superior - but what mattered even more for us as a small department was that we were no longer split across different parts of the Strand, but together in one place... Younger and older colleagues are able to mingle outside of formal structures like staff meetings, which sounds like a small step, but it leads instantly to a fundamental change in atmosphere, towards a greater level of community and collaboration. I certainly know that everyone in the German Department thinks that what has been achieved in the time is quite extraordinary - and personally, having experienced similar moves at both my previous institutions, the speed, efficiency and participatory nature of the entire process was unprecedented.’– Dr Ben Schofield of the German Department regarding the working environment when he moved to the Virginia Woolf Building.
