King's College London Theological Trust

King's College London Theological Trust was founded in 1980 with funds realised as a result of the transfer to the general purposes of the College of the former Theological Hostel. The Trust is empowered to provide financial assistance to students and former students of the Department of Theology & Religious Studies/Department of Education (Theology & Education) under the following headings:

  • Further the education of students and of former students of the Department of Theology & Religious Studies/Department of Education (Theology & Education) in such ways as the Trustees think fit.
  • Furthering the vocational training of such students and in particular of those who intend to seek ordination in the Church of England
  • The advancement of the Christian religion, particularly in accordance with the doctrines of the Church of England, among such students and former students

The Trustees fulfil the terms of the Trust as follows:

One Scholarship is awarded (normally each year, but please see specific arrangements below) to a student from overseas who has been accepted to study in the Department of Theology & Religious Studies. There are no geographical limitations but the Trustees aim to award the scholarship to a student who is able to benefit from the educational opportunity offered by the department, who is unable to obtain an education at this level in their home country and who is expected to make a significant contribution to the religious life of their home country through the medium of one of the Christian denominations.

The scholarship meets the full cost of fees and provides a maintenance grant at a rate which the Trustees aim to keep broadly comparable with those provided by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC). Scholarships are awarded for one year in the first instance but may be renewed subject to satisfactory academic progress. No individual grant will exceed the Home student tuition fee, although it is unusual that the maximum amount will be awarded.

If you wish to apply, please download the Trust guide and the relevant application form below. The closing date for applications for the Overseas Scholarship for the 2019-20 academic year is 12:00 (noon) on 19 February 2021. Applications and references need to be returned to the Clerk to the Trustees either by email (to theoltrust@kcl.ac.uk) or post by this deadline.

Grants are for one year but recipients may apply to the Trustees for renewal of a grant for a second or subsequent year subject to evidence of continuing need and the receipt of a satisfactory report from the student's academic supervisor.

If you wish to apply, please download the Trust guide and the relevant application form below. The closing date for applications for the Autumn meeting in the 2019-20 academic year is 12.00 (noon) on 21 August 2020. Applications

The Trustees meet twice a year in March and September to consider applications for Individual Small Grants and in March for the Overseas Scholarship.

The funds of the Trust are strictly limited and the Trustees are able to meet only a proportion of the requests which they receive. Applicants for Individual Small Grants should be in a position to meet a significant part of their study costs from other sources.
