On Thursday 13 June 2024, the PGR Student Showcase took place at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) Main Building in Denmark Hill. This celebratory and competitive event was re-launched after it was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and this year it attracted more than 100 attendees throughout the day. It featured power pitches and poster presentations by the PhD/MD(Res) students at the IoPPN.

All current IoPPN PGR students were invited to submit an application to participate in the power pitch and poster presentation, or poster presentation only. Showcase guidelines were made available on the Internal Showcase page.

PGR Showcase 2024 3

On the day, Associate Dean Gareth Barker delivered a warm welcome and introduction as host of the event. Professor Barker introduced the Keynote Speaker for the event, Beth Gallimore, who is the 2024 King’s 3-minute thesis (3MT) competition winner. Beth enthusiastically reiterated their 3MT; “Voices of Barbados: Lived Experiences of Mental Health Stigma and Help-Seeking among Young People” and will represent King’s at the national 3MT competition in October 2024.

Misha Bazarov was also invited to speak as a 3MT competition finalist and performed their 3MT; “High Hopes: Navigating the Cloud of Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD) with Mobile Health Apps”.

Both speakers reflected on their PhD journeys and 3MT competition experience, providing tips and advice to encourage their peers to participate in the future.

PGR Showcase 2024 2

Beth Gallimore introduced the Power Pitches segment where eight PGR students were invited to explain an aspect of their research projects in two minutes. A delicious lunch break followed, during which the students and judges prepared for the Poster Presentations segment. The students presented their research posters in six minutes, followed by five minutes of questions led by two academic judges.

When the students weren’t presenting, they were encouraged to network with other students and celebrate their different research topics. The audience voted for their favourite power pitches and poster presentations. The panel of judges also selected their favourite and runner-up poster presentation.

The afternoon ended with a festive social reception, where all attendees could enjoy food and drinks, as well as the prize-giving to the winners.

The Showcase 2024 winners were:

  • Power pitch winner: Mohua Kibria Mumu
  • Poster presentation winner: Engin Keser
  • Poster presentation runner-up: Rosanna Hildersley
  • Attendees’ choice winner: Norah Alothman

The feedback received by the audience, the participants and the judges has been very positive, and we wish to work to make next year’s Showcase even better.
