Module description

Alexander’s Afterlife explores the narrative and iconographic representations and recreations of Alexander the Great. We focus on deconstructing the many strands of Alexander’s image and exploring his development as a quasi-legendary as well as a historical figure.

Topics include: the search for Alexander’s tomb and body, Islamic and pre-Islamic Middle Eastern perspectives on his conquests, the role of Alexander in travel and geographical texts, the relationship between the Alexander ‘Romance’ and the canonical histories of his life and the visualisation of Alexander in film.
