PhD scholarship: Social Foundations of Cryptography

3.5 year fully-funded studentship in informatics to start in October 2025.

Award details

Cryptography presumes and models social relations, such as that between a signer and a verifier. In this project we put cryptographic notions at the mercy of ethnography.  In particular, we study the security needs in large scale protests.

 

 

Award value

Funding is available for 3.5 years, covering:

  • Tuition fees (full home or overseas tuition fees);
  • Stipend at the UK Research Council rate (plus London weighting);
  • An allowance for research consumables and travel.

Eligibility criteria

This award is open to UK and overseas students.

Please refer to the degree in Computer Science or Mathematics or a related field.

Selection process

Applicants will have an initial informal chat with Professor Martin Albrecht and possibly Dr Ben Dowling. Then, we will shortlist based on CV, transcript and a writing sample (such as an UG or MSc project), followed by an interview.
