New changes to the mitigating circumstances rules

A new mitigating circumstances policy has come into effect from 1 September 2024. It’s been developed with input from faculties, our Students & Education Directorate, KCLSU and our Academic Board, all aligned with the best practices recommended by the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) Good Practice Framework.

You can find the new policy in the Policy Hub and find everything else you need to know on Student Services Online.

The new policy aims to improve your experience and support you if any difficulties affect your academic performance. It introduces some key changes and new sections to provide:

  • A supportive framework that maintains academic integrity
  • Minimum standards in the application of this policy
  • Clearer rules on the management of requests, expectations and responsibilities.

Important to note: The former mitigating circumstances policy will apply to any assessments taken in 2023-24 academic year, which includes re-assessments submitted after 1 September 2024. If you’ve taken any assessments before 1 September 2024, the former policy will also apply. Your faculty will make sure they use the correct policy depending on when your assessment was taken.
