What is Lunar New Year?
Lunar New Year celebrates the arrival of springtime on the lunisolar calendars. It is widely observed in China, Korea, Vietnam, and various other Asian communities worldwide. The festivities usually begin a few days before the Lunar New Year and continue for 3–15 days afterward.
How is Lunar New Year traditionally celebrated?
During this period, many people travel back to their family for reunions and special feasts. They also participate in cultural practices and rituals, including:
- Lion and dragon dances
- Firework displays
- Calligraphy decorations
- Handing out red envelopes with cash (red is the "it" colour of the season and symbolises good fortune).
These traditions honour ancestors and deities while praying for prosperity and health in the new year.
