Students celebrate their joint collection of essays on environmental education

On 9 July current students, alumni and staff of the MA in STEM Education programme celebrated with friends, family and colleagues two collections of essays focused on the relationship of education with the environmental crisis.

Heartwood Launch Cake
Heartwood book editors, Sophie Perry, Melissa Glackin & Shirin Hine (L-R), cut celebration cake.

Hosted at Holland Park Ecology Centre, a learning site that is integrated into the MA module Environment, Sustainability and the Role of Education, the evening provided an opportunity for chapter authors to see their essays in print for the first time.

‘Rather than just being in my thesis, it is great to have the support to write out of it and share insights about the role of education in the environmental crisis with family and friends’– Rachel Sawle, STEM Education MA Alumni (2023)

Heartwood Volumes 1 & 2 are a collection of personal heartfelt reflections aimed on environmental education written by students as part of the MA in STEM Education or as part of their PhD programme within the School of Education, Communication & Society.

The essay collections provide insights and reflections which are empirically grounded and theoretically informed in a creative, curious and accessible manner.

This collection is a unique opportunity for students to reflect on their experiences through drawing, acknowledging words cannot always express how we feel in our hearts.– Dr Melissa Glakin, Reader in Science & Environmental Education

The publications are funded by WIPRO STEM education funding, King’s College London, School of Education, Communication & Society’s Research and Impact fund (2023, 2024) and ESRC’s London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership fund (2024).
